Apr 1869 - BERLIN / Hans Poelzig is born the 30th of April. An influential modern expressionist architect, he built industrial buildings, offices, cinemas and was involved in architectural set designs for the UFA film production (The Golem, 1920). He was an influential member of the Deutscher Werkbund. He is also known for the interior redesign of the Berlin Grosses Schauspielhaus (1919). Like many German architects of his generation, his career was interrupted by the Nazis. Together with Richard Neutra, Erich Mendelshon and Walter Gropius, they left an immense legacy of sensitive, well-proportioned architecture, always referring simple compositions, honest materiality and a deep sense of symbolic space.
